Enjoy Disfrutar
The World's 50 Best Restaurants list for 2024 was published this week and the world's best restaurant (according to their panel) is Barcelona restaurant Disfrutar. The name certainly rolls off the tongue better than the Sustainable Restaurant Award winner, Nobelhart & Schmutzig (say that three times fast!), and coming in 2nd last year it can't be considered a surprise victory for Disfrutar.
So what's the deal? Here's the snapshot:
- Disfrutar was started in 2014; the name translates to "enjoy"
- Three El Bulli alumni are behind it: the chef owners of Disfrutar are Mateu Casañas, Oriol Castro & Eduard Xatruch
- This is the trio's second restaurant: their first is Compartir in Cadaques which they opened in 2012, a year after El Bulli closed (and just 30 mins from the site of the legendary restaurant)
- Disfrutar offers two tasting menus of around 30 plates: a Classic menu that showcases the chefs' favourite dishes from the restaurant, or the Festival menu that showcases more seasonal creativity
- How much is the tasting menu at Disfrutar? Both menus are €290 per person; there's also a wine pairing at €160
- The restaurant seats just over 40 pax
- The space designed by El Equipo Creative is exceptionally thoughtful and has won numerous awards.
- What is Disfrutar known for? The restaurant is focused on creativity and modern cuisine, or 'avant-garde' by their own definition, so very much as one would expect from El Bulli alumni
- Disfrutar has also been awarded 3 Michelin stars
